Happy Spring!

Let’s hope winter get’s the hint and takes a hike on out of here.  This has been the most dreadful of seasons for me. Let’s look past the health issues and anxiety among a lot of other things that make me shake my head and just say “No!”.  I just want to talk about the weather, got it?  Yep, I come back with a post and I discuss the flippin’ weather.  How’s that for a blog?

I’m not a winter weenie, I truly am not.  I’ve lived in some pretty wintery places like New York, Alaska, and Germany had a pretty mix of blustery weather too.  Heck I remember making igloos for fun on the way to school and getting lost in the snow as a child.  So with that being said I’m still going to cry, WHAT THE HECK MOTHER NATURE????  The Polar Vortex, the winter storm after winter storm, and a lovely dose of bipolar weather the make all your hobbit hole dreams come true.  I bet nobody blames me for sticking around in the house. When we get down into the 20’s with sleet and snow on Tuesday and it’s working its way up into the 70’s by the end of the week do you blame a person for going a bit weather insane?  I’m saying good riddance winter, seriously.  I’m done.  I’m done with everything that has gone on these past few months and trying to move on.  Maybe the first day of spring will be symbolism for that you think?

I’m going to wish happy Spring thoughts and shout Blessed Ostara followed by a little information on this changing season.  I gathered a little bit of information about the pagan celebration and honestly I can totally dig it.  It’s beautiful insight and makes me think happy thoughts for the upcoming season.  Anything for inspiration, right?

Ostara, also known as Easter,Alban Eiler, Lady Day, and the Festival of Trees.

Ostara is the celebration of the Spring (Vernal) Equinox when day and night balance.  Astronomically, the sun crosses the celestial equator at this time. The name for this Sabbat is derived from the Teutonic lunar Goddess Eostre.  Her chief symbols were the rabbit (for fertility, and her worshipers often saw the image of a rabbit in the full moon) and the egg (representing the cosmic egg of creation).  This is where the customs of “Easter Eggs” and the “Easter Bunny” originated.

This is a time of renewal, regeneration and resurrections as the Earth wakes from her long slumber.  This is the time of planting, children, and young animals.

Ostara promises freedom from the dreariness of winters, it heralds the return of hope and dreams.  The God of Spring is the young God, playful and joyful, born at Winter Solstice, nurtured at Imbole, now he’s like a young and mischievous child, still wild and new.  He is raw, creative energy that has not yet been harnessed, tamed or civilized.  He sees with clear eyes and does not hesitate to announce that the emperor is naked.  He comes to us in the Spring when all of nature is shifting and changing; seeds poking out sprouts, butterflies emerging from cocoons, tadpoles growing legs and turning into frogs.  It is also the beginning of the courtship between the God and Goddess, which will be consecrated on Beltane.

Technology Overload…….my vacation from the world

storm

Calling my last few months a vacation would be the super sweet Willy Wonka version in the least.  Have you ever had a perfect storm of the mind?  Where so many things happen at once then all of a sudden *BOOM* you’re swept away waiting for the clean-up?  I suppose you can say that is what happened to me.  As most of you know, I struggle with understanding and keeping up with the many forms of social media and no matter what I do there is always more to do that had to be done yesterday.  I triumphed for quite a while and got into a good rhythm I had thought.  That was when the joy of the holidays swept upon my household and all the demanding things that went with it.  The strong pull of that current rocked my brain back and forth and probably loosened a few boards off my ship.  When the footing began to slip a few personal matters crept up on me and with my editing mixed with all these other beastly things it created that perfect storm.  I’m not sure how sudden it happened but the storm that brewed was ferocious.  The power flickered and for a while nothing but a lull of silence inside.  The lights were on but I don’t think anyone was home.  A short circuit.  Things like that are bound to happen and the positive about it is that I held on pretty tight through it all.

One thing that I can tell you is that the waters are to a slight lapping of the waves and land has been spotted.  That electronic disconnect that has happened…..let’s hope it’s over and done with and I continue on my way.

Now if you will excuse me, this storm analogy has me wondering if my creativity has sprung back to life or I’m sitting in that life boat in that completely off colored life vest.

Just know that I’ve been resurfacing and with assistance I might just make it in the big giant world that surrounds me.

Popcorn and Rubber-Necking: NaNoWriMo Survival Guide For Spectators

Good tips for my side of the coin

bareknucklewriter's avatarBare Knuckle Writer

As promised, part two of my Survival Guide to NaNoWriMo. Part One, for Participants, is over here. This time, pull up a sideline chair and get the popcorn. Here’s how to make it through the month when it seems like everyone around you is obsessed with plot bunnies and word counts.

1) Breathe. Don’t get caught up in the hype/panic. That shit is contagious. Hang around enough stressed out people and you’ll feel stressed even if you’re not doing anything. Avoid this bullshit—since stress is probably half the goddamn reason you’re not doing NaNo to begin with—and remember to take a deep breath. Or get a drink. Both help.

2) Do Other Shit. Not doing NaNo? This looks like a great time to reorganize your office. Or get a head start on your holiday shopping. Or finally make some headway on the ninja-training-for-dogs program. Bonus points: you get to brag…

Twenty Questions With Charles Yallowitz

Twenty Questions With Charles Yallowitz

Changes to Come!

If you haven’t gone over to CSB then check it out and wait for the changes. A wonderful group of people with such talent!

It’s November already?

I’m not quite certain where the time has gone but none-the-less it went bye-bye.  Halloween was wonderful for what it was and Autumn has brought forth any reason I can think up to have pumpkin scented or flavored whoosits and whatsits.  I’ve been buried deep in the torture….I mean help….of my beta readers because I doubt I could get along without them.  The first go-round was draining enough.  This time I believe that I have a bit more confidence behind me, even if it’s not me as per se.  Although I haven’t met my goal of finishing the second book to get it out in time for Halloween, I’m shooting for a Christmas release.  No promises, but I am going to work my hardest.  In translation, I might be a little cranky from time to time since 300 plus pages isn’t something to just throw out there.

So back to it being November.  Yay, right?  It’s a month of almost everything happening at the same time.  Veteran’s Day comes first for me and is quite important as my family is deeply rooted in the military one form or another, I am certain I will touch base more as the day comes around. We have the lovely Thanksgivukkah which has cutely combined the interesting crossover of Thanksgiving and the first day of Hanukkah/Chanukah.  I think its a great combination if you ask me.  Bring out the turkey fryers filled with oil and give plenty of thanks.  Spend time with people that you care about, or at least know that you will have a slight chance of making it out alive after being around.  Avoid the stores.  Yep, I’m one of those. I’m not about to head out into the stores to do shopping for the people I was oh-so-close to using the carving knife on hours previous.

Birthdays!!!! That’s the most important thing going on in November for me.  Why?  Because I get older.  Yay….oh wait…..yay?  I was one of those kids who had such a wonderful time fighting Thanksgiving fever and hardly ever getting a birthday wish.  I have deemed my birthday a national holiday, but I’m not quite certain the trend has taken full effect though.  Just remember, November 27th is J.S. Riddle day and we’ll be good to go.  Buy me a drink and I’ll be even happier.  This year it’s not about me, though.  I will be getting a brand new niece (cue the Price is Right music) that I am head over heels excited about.

Let’s not forget Sir Ares.  He’s an old man, hitting the bit 11 and as his health seems to get better hit attitude remains full of sassy old man syndrome.  I swear if he were a human he’d be yelling at us to all keep it quiet because we’re making too much noise.  Speaking of old farts…I have to share the month with my father.  5 days forever between birthdays and most of the time we combined it.  But hey, I suppose our crotchety attitude toward Thanksgiving stealing our glory combined is nothing to scoff at.  We do it loud and proud.

So that’s it.  A bunch of gibberish of me basically saying I’m alive and not to send out a search and rescue team.  Oh wait, you weren’t?

Character Origins: Queen Ionia

Charles Yallowitz's avatarLegends of Windemere

First, this character is named after Ionia of Readfulthings.  She has become a dear friend even though we only met this year, 2013.  So, I’m sure people are already jumping to the comments for one reason or another.

Now, the character of Queen Ionia is a major factor in Legends of Windemere: Allure of the Gypsies.  This is where I start deviating drastically from the game this series is based off of and she is one of the reasons.  The guy who ran the game loved ‘The Forgotten Realms’ and he brought in the famous NPC’s a lot.  It meant I had to make variations that grew over time when they were major players in the plot.  In this event, he used a popular character named The Simbul.  She is a sorceress who rules some kingdom and is sort of deranged because she tied magic rings to her…

Otherwise known as my house.  The one I painstakingly sweated tears and blood to get in time to move, the one that brought me to a better place to live, the one that brings old charm into a beautifully old neighborhood, and the best place I have ever rented.  Mind you, this place was built […]

The Death of a Character: To Mourn or Not to Mourn

I was asked a question earlier by someone I find both wise, endearing, and completely talented in all that she does.  Her question has been bouncing around in my mind and I realize that my answer to her was very swift and two dimensional so maybe I should expand a little on the subject.  The […]
